The Nordic Alcohol and Drug Policy Network
(NordAN Nordiskt Alkohol- och Narkotikapolitiskt samarbete)

NordAN was established in September 2000 as a network of voluntary organizations who all worked to reduce the consumption of alcohol and other drugs and who supported a restrictive alcohol and drug policy and who did not receive contributions from the commercial alcohol industry.

Acting on these principles NordAN today have grown to have 88 non-governmental, voluntary member organisations in all the eight Nordic and Baltic countries (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden), all active in the alcohol and drug field.
Memberorganisations are involved in advocacy, education and training of voluntary and professional community workers, counselling, residential and treatments services for drinkers, users of drugs and their families, in workplace actions and schoolbased programmes as well as in public information.

As a network NordAN advocates the prevention and reducing of alcohol- and drug related harm through effective evidence based alcohol- and drug policy in the Nordic and Baltic countries and in the entire Northern dimension region of Europe.

NordAN is represented i the Social Inclusion, Healthy Lifestyles & Work Ability – Expert Group (SIHLWA EG) of the Northern Dimension Partnership for Public Health and Social Welbeeing (NDPHS).

NordAN is a also a member of the European Alcohol Policy Alliance; Eurocare.

NordAN is collaborating partner in the Building Capacity for Action Project and thus represented in the Alcohol Policy Network Committee.

NordAN is a member of the European Alcohol and Health Forum of the European Commissions Health and Consumer Protection / Public Health and Risk Assesment. Directorate General.

Estonian Temperance Union (EESTI KARSKUSLIIT AVE. )

Estonian Temperance Union (AVE) is a successor of Estonian Temperance Union, which was recreated in 1989 but has acted since 1922. During the Soviet period AVE was banned like any other nongovernmental organisation, but today it has about 400 members who are all working on a voluntary principal.

Organizing cooperation among NGOs to influence alcohol policy.
AVE makes contacts with similar organizations trying to find cooperation opportunities for achieving similar goals. To curb alcohol related harm AVE is a strong advocate for efficient alcohol policy based on science and international experience, keeping regular contact with governmental organisations, parties and members of parliament.

Effective prevention work among children and young people
Among young people AVE is developing alternative leisure-time activities and speaks for the healthy life-styles. In 2007 AVE opened in Tallinn its first alcohol-free caffeteria for young people. Since 2003 a free newspaper for young people "OK – Ole Kaine" ("OK – Be Sober") has been published.

Dissemination of information
AVE also organizes informatory lectures about alcohol, organizes seminars and conferences which propagate temperance and healthy lifestyle, publishes materials about alcohol related harm, alcohol policy etc.

International coorperation
AVE is a member of Eurocare and NordAN.
